“What tongue is your tongue when your tongue smells like dung?” – from a drunken sailor’s song in the Crystal Isles

Although the Old Elten language unites many of the peoples of Cornos, Palus, The Crystal Isles, Nandor, and Elter, there are a multitude of languages with a great number of speakers, some isolated from the rest of the world entirely. Even those who know Old Elten will often interject expressions from other languages in their speech, and it is often critical to know the natives’ language in order to interact with them.

Starting Languages: Your dreamer starts off knowing one of the languages of your Region. Your race may grant you additional languages that you automatically know. In addition, for every 3 points your Intelligence score exceeds 10, you know an additional language (1 extra language at Intelligence 13, 2 at 16, etc.)

Learning Languages: If you decide you wish to learn a language, you must spend at least 3 months of study with written texts and practice with native speakers and have an Intelligence score of at least 15, spend at least 6 months immersed in an environment that primarily speaks that language and have an Intelligence score of at least 13, or spend a full year in an area that primarily speaks that language (no minimum Intelligence score).
